Possible Asteriod Impact Concerns Scientist

Scientist recently concerned with an ELE Extinction Level Event have been busy storing seed in various places around the Earth in hopes of restarting civilization should an asteriod collides with Earth and wipes out half of everything on the planet. Why the BIG concern? Why now?
